PUBLICATION DESIGN
I worked for SAVVY, the first national business magazine for women, under editor Wendy Reid Crisp and art director Wendy Palitz, early in my career. They both believed in research -- what articles were most read? What designs were most liked? This taught me a lot about designing publications that serve the reader.
-
Legibility. If the articles are not easy to read (fonts too small, too light, too wide, etc.), then your customers (readers) will not read it..
-
Appropriate art. Design elements -- photography, illustration, and typography -- should support the editorial and make it more understandable and impactful.
-
Beauty. Reading your publication should be pleasing and intellectually stimulating to the reader.
-
Speed. Your art staff should be able to put your publication together efficiently by following the rules of the design.
-
Economy. What paper you use, what printer you use, what art program you use will effect the design, and the costs, of the publication.
I design with both the readers and the business interests of the publication in mind.
